ABB Robotic Waterjet Cutting Technology Accelerates Penetration into Automotive Interior Manufacturing

As automotive lightweighting and interior quality requirements continue to rise, ABB robotic waterjet cutting solutions are becoming an important choice for automated processing of automotive interior parts. A number of recent integration projects have been implemented in quick succession, indicating that this technological route is moving from pilot applications toward large-scale adoption.

Overhead Workstations Emerge as a New Trend

A new generation of ABB overhead robotic waterjet cutting workstations has completed development and commissioning and been officially put into production. This solution uses ABB six-axis robots mounted upside down inside a enclosed workstation, specifically targeting three-dimensional irregular workpieces such as automotive headliners, carpets, instrument panels, and door panels, providing a fully automated integrated solution for trimming, hole cutting, and slot cutting. The inverted layout allows the robot's working envelope to extend fully downward, completely covering large cover parts and complex three-dimensional curved surfaces, with repeat positioning accuracy reaching ±0.01mm, enabling dead-angle-free processing.

Repeat Purchases Confirm Solution Maturity

An automotive interior manufacturer in Southeast Asia recently completed a second purchase of the ABB IRB 4600 seated waterjet cutting system. The customer first introduced the system in 2023 for cutting soundproof headliners. The equipment has operated stably with consistent cutting quality, significantly reducing labor costs. This expansion purchase is based on recognition of equipment quality and service system, further expanding the scale of the robotic waterjet cutting production line.

Multi-Robot Collaboration Boosts Capacity

In large workpiece processing scenarios, dual-robot collaborative solutions perform prominently. Taking the dual ABB 2400 overhead workstation as an example, the effective cutting area reaches 3000mm×2000mm, mainly used for cutting automotive headliners and carpets, with annual capacity reaching 100,000 pieces. The seated dual-arm configuration with fixed dual stations achieves continuous seamless operation by alternating between cutting at Station A and loading/unloading at Station B, reducing system waiting time to zero.

Significant Advantages of Cold Cutting Process

Waterjet cutting is a room-temperature cold cutting process with no high temperatures and no thermal deformation throughout cutting. It does not burn interior plastics or foam materials, and the cut edge is smooth without burrs, requiring no secondary grinding. The equipment uses only clean tap water as the cutting medium, produces no pollution, and cutting noise is below 75dB, complying with environmental protection and safety production standards.

Currently, ABB robotic waterjet cutting solutions cover multiple models including IRB 2400, IRB 2600, and IRB 4600, and are widely used in automotive interiors, home appliance manufacturing, and rail transit composite material processing fields.
